John Ball Zoological Garden, which spans 140 acres and is nestled into the city's western bluffs, is home to nearly 2,000 species. The Zoo, which was founded in 1884 with a gift from adventurer John Ball, has developed into a regional attraction with over 500,000 annual visitors. It is open during the weekend.
A souvenir shop, many concession options, and the new Monkey Bar for snacks and rotating draught beers are all available at the park. Calvin Ecosystem Preserve & Native Gardens is a wonderful green spot in Grand Rapids. The 104-acre nature preserve includes a wildlife sanctuary, trails, and an interpretive center. In wildlife conservation, interpretation is a communication (sometimes writing or pictures) in which the visitor is meant to form an emotional bond with the park or landmark.
The preserve has over 260 species of native plants. Most of the trails are through wooded areas. It is open and free to the public each day from dawn to dusk. Calvin Ecosystem Preserve & Native Gardens is an amazing location to walk and learn about nature.
The Grand Rapids Public Museum was founded in 1854 and has continued to thrive ever since. The museum has three levels and covers a wide range of topics, including Michigan culture, history, and science. The galleries here are updated on a regular basis, so you may always find something new to spark your curiosity. If you want to understand more about the galaxy, the museum also has a planetarium called the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium.
The Ford Presidential Museum, dedicated to Gerald R. Ford, the 38th President of the United States, spans over 44,000 square feet along the banks of the Grand River. Over 20,000 items from the lives and careers of President Ford and his wife, Betty, are housed in the Museum's archives, which are also located on the 20-acre campus. A pedestrian bridge over the Grand River connects the Museum's grounds to other Downtown Grand Rapids attractions.
President Ford's life is chronicled in exhibits that include an identical copy of the Oval Office, candid family portraits, and presentations on the Watergate scandal, 1970s pop culture, and more. Temporary exhibitions, educational activities, and community events are also held at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum.
